twenty-two

That night of Sid's birthday was pretty much the only exciting thing that happened from then til August 17 when Kay started moving into her dorm. Sid was always gone because of training camp, and most of the time he wouldn't get back til late and Kay was too tired to do anything. Not to mention, training camp worked Sid hard and he was always wiped out.

Friday, August 18, 2005.
Sid had off yesterday and they had begun moving Kay into her dorm. Today, they had to finish. Her roommate Heidi was already moved in, but she hadn't met her yet because she wasn't there yesterday.
It was around 3:00 in the afternoon and Sid and Kay were packing the last of the things into the back of the car. Sid emerged from the house and shoved the folded bed sheets into the trunk. He shut it.
"is that it?" he asked.
"yeah" Kay answered, getting into the drivers seat.
They drove the thirty minutes to the campus and parked at the dorms. Kay carried the big laundry basket filled with bed sheets, pillows, a little tv, a dvd player, a rug, all of her toiletries (which was alot), food/drinks, pictures to put on her wall, and laundry stuff. She had brought all the big stuff (like her mattress and desk) and clothes yesterday.
Sidney was carrying a mini fridge.. which was decently sized. They had to walk up three big flights of steps and he looked like he was going to pass out.
"are you ok sid" Kay practically yelled down the stairs as they walked up.
"i'm fine" he grunted.
Kay rolled her eyes. She opened the door to her dorm room and set her basket down on her side (the right side) of the room. Her roommate wasn't there again. She immediately took out the light blue shaggy throw rug and placed it at the small entrance. Sid arrived soon after her and set the mini fridge down with a thud.
"where do you want this?" he asked with a deep breathe. He was a little irritable.
"how about in this corner" Kay pointed to the left hand corner closest to the door. He picked up the thing again and set it down in the corner. "can you help me put these bed sheets on, then we'll be done." She grabbed the navy blue sheets and spread them out over the small twin sized bed. Sid grabbed the corners and stretched them out over the bed. He pulled the sheets up and Kay smoothed them out. She threw the pillows onto the freshly made bed, then threw herself onto it. Sid sat down beside her.
"done" Kay sighed. "I can put all my pictures up on my wall tonight, i'll just set up the tv later, and i'll leave my clothes in the basket for now considering there's only one dresser."
All that was in the room was two beds, a crappy dresser, and a desk on the other side of Kay's bed that she had brought yesterday. There was a couple shelves mounted on the wall above the beds, and a window on Kay's side.
Sid nodded. "sounds good. are you hungry? cause i'm starving."
"well lets go get something" she said, getting up off the bed. They went back down to the car and drove to a nearby sandwich shop. Nothing fancy considering they were both in gym shorts. They both ordered Rubens. A few people recognized Sid and stopped to say hi, which didn't really bother him, but he was tired and unexciting. Kay just stood by and smiled like always. She grabbed their orders when they were ready. The two ducked out of the place, back to the car and back to the dorm, back up the three flights of stairs, back into the cramped room with her unknown roommates Philadelphia Eagles posters. Yeah, she was from Philly. That would go over well.
Sid and Kay sat on Kay's bed and ate in the peace and quiet. It wasn't weird, they were just worn out. When they finished, Kay noticed the corner of the carpet she had put down was curled up against the bed. It had to go under it.
"Can you lift up the bed, i wanna put the corner of this carpet under it." she said, getting up off the bed. Sid slowly got up and tried lifting it with one arm. "just lift it up, sid" Kay said quickly with obvious annoyance added.
"i'm trying, kay" he said with the same annoyed tone. He lifted it with two hands this time.
"Thank you" she replied sternly. "i didn't realize it was such a chore"
"well gee, i'm sorry i'm not a ray of fucking sunshine today"
"i never said you had to be" Kay began fiddling through her laundry basket full of miscellaneous items.
"i'm tired, i'm sore, i just want to relax" he rubbed his forehead and face.
"then why are you helping me, why didn't you stay home like you have been doing since August 4!" Kay erupted, throwing her hands into the air.
"I have not stayed home since August fourth, i've hung out with you every chance i've gotten." Sid raised his voice back at her.
"yep" she gave up, she wasn't in the mood to argue. Her hands were resting on her hips as she took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment. When she opened them, sh looked around the room then back at Sid, and bit her lip. He just looked at her.
Out of nowhere, Sid jumped up and grabbed her waste, pushing her up against the door. He bit her lip and Kay deepened the kiss. She ran her fingers through his dark, thick hair. They moved from the door to against the wall without parting, and were going at it until they heard the door fly open.
"jesus christ" Sid jumped and cursed under his breath when he saw what looked to be Kay's roommate Heidi standing in the door way.
"hey, don't let me stop you, by all means." Heidi threw two shopping bags on her bed and began going through them. Kay and Sid just stood there for a few moments.
"i'm Kay" Kay introduced herself and walked over to her. She extended her hand.
"Heidi" her roommate flashed a smile at her and shook her hand.
"and this is my boyfriend, Sidney... Sid" Kay looked back at Sid still standing in the corner.
"yes i know who he is" Heidi chuckled and rolled her eyes.
alright then, Kay thought. She looked back at Sid and widened her eyes as if to say "what the hell. get over here". He just shrugged and emerged from the corner.
"hi" he cleared his throat. "nice to meet you" he extended his hand as well. Boy was this awkward. Heidi looked back up from her bag once again.
"nice to meet you too." she said back and shook his hand.
"Well, better get going. I'll see you later, Heidi. It was nice to finally meet you." Kay interrupted. Heidi nodded and smiled.
She started out the door and walked briskly down the stairs. Sid was right behind her trying to keep up. "I really don't think that could have gotten anymore awkward."
"yeah it was a little uncomfortable" Sid replied. Kay unlocked the car from afar, making the tail lights light up.
"honestly, was the whole 'yes of COURSE i know who he is' thing necessary? really?" She approached the car. Sid didn't say anything more. They both got in and Kay started it.
"it'll be ok" Sid assured.

They drove back to their neighborhood and Kay pulled into the Lemieux's driveway. She turned to Sid.
"thanks for helping me" she faintly smiled and gave him a peck on the lips.
"you know, the campus is only thirty minutes away, you can come home anytime" he said quietly.
"or you can come visit me all the time in my dorm room... where we're alone... not counting Heidi" she laughed at the last part and kissed him once again. "but seriously, i'm staying in a dorm to be on my own for once i don't wanna be coming home all the time. so you're just going to have to come over all the time." she smirked.
"ok, i can do that" Sid leaned in for one last kiss that was a little longer than the one before. "call me" he said, getting out of the car.
"i will." Kay smiled and he shut the door.
She backed out of the driveway and sighed. "...i might as well drop in on the parentals for one last 'so-long' while i'm in the neighborhood." she said to herself.

twenty-one.

It was getting closer and closer to Sid's birthday, and Kay had a pretty good idea of what she wanted to do. She had emailed his mom and gotten tons of pictures from when he was younger. She also had some on her camera of him and her together. She began making a photo album type thing.
As for the date, he had informed her that he would be at training camp all day, but would be available in the evening. After thinking long and hard about what to do, she decided to cook a cake for him... and the rest is a surprise, sorry.

(tuesday) August 7, 2005.
Around noon, Kay began finishing up with her gift. She slipped all the pictures into the album, admiring all of them one by one. There were ones from when he was a baby all the way up until now. At the end of it, Kay printed out one of her favorite quotes and stuck it in, along with a personal letter from her.
Trina had emailed Kay a long letter to Sid about how she missed having her son around, and she couldn't believe he was finally 18. It almost made Kay cry. She tucked that away at the end of the album also.
When she was done, she shut it and ran her fingers delicately over the cover. It was decently sized and all black with a small red heart cut out in the middle of it. She placed it in the gift bag when she was done admiring it, and stuffed the tissue paper in. Next, she had to talk to her mom about tonight.
"mom?" she called from her room.
"yes honey" she responded, walking into the room with a clothes basket resting on her hip.
"as you probably know, tonight's Sid's eighteenth birthday.." Kay began. Her mom nodded. "i wanted to have him over but i was hoping you guys could maybe go someplace..." She hoped her mom wouldn't take what she just said the wrong way.
"if that's what you want" Her mom smiled, understanding where she was coming from, thank god. "just don't do anything stupid Kaylen" she warned in a stern tone as she walked out the door.
"i won't. thanks mom." Kay called with a smile.
Now that that was out of the way, she could sit back and relax for a couple hours.

When the rest of Kay's family was getting ready to leave for dinner with their friends, her mom warned her once more about not doing anything "stupid". Her dad told her not to burn the house down like he always says before he leaves her alone. Kay promised it would be fine, and she practically pushed them out the door and shut it as fast as possible. She ran into the kitchen and checked the clock that read 5:34. Sid would be there at 7:30 since he was eating dinner with the Lemieuxs.
"two hours" Kay said to herself as she scanned the pantry for cake mix. "no cake mix. that's just wonderful."
She ran over to the front door and quickly slipped on her flip flops, then sprinted out the door to her car. She drove like a crazy woman to the grocery store and probably looked like a crazy woman too. She had a tank top on with shorts and her hair was in a messy bun that was quickly coming undone. She had no make up on and bags under her eyes showing her lack of sleep. That wasn't her concern at the moment though. She hopped out of the car with her purse and keys, and she jogged into the store. Once inside, she walked swiftly to the baking section and examined the cake mixes.
"chocolate... vanilla.. white..." she said to herself with her hand on her chin in deep thought. "how about vanilla with chocolate icing. classic." she grabbed the vanilla cake mix and chocolate icing and ran to the check out area, quickly paying the cashier and running back out of the store.
When she arrived back home it was 6:00. She mixed the cake, poured it into a pan, and popped it in the oven. She went upstairs to pick out her outfit.
She ended up picking out a dress. She just felt comfortable in dresses for some reason. This dress was gray and she paired it with little white button up sweater. She didn't wear any shoes considering she was in her own house. When she was finished getting dressed, she let her hair down from her bun and it was still a little wet from her shower after her run this morning. She sprayed it with some curling stuff and it became wavy.
After she checked herself in the mirror once again, she went back down to the cake and took it out. It was a little before 7:00 now, and she set the delicious smelling dessert on the counter to cool off. She iced it when it was done cooling, and she set Sid's present on the counter.
"what to do next..." she wandered. "how could i forget." she walked over to the couch and grabbed a tan blanket off of it, then went out to the patio and spread it out. She had found out that tonight was going to be a good night for shooting stars, so she figured they could sit outside. She set the cake along with his present on the blanket and sat down on it. Now, finally, she could relax.

"hello?" Sid poked his head out the door with a smile. Kay turned around to see him.
"Sid!" she ran over to him and gave him a big hug. "happy birthday you're officially an adult" she said as she kissed him.
"thanks... but i feel the same" Sid laughed.
"you won't for long. come on i made cake." Kay took his hand and led him to the blanket. They sat down indian style across from each other with two forks.
"i'm not supposed to be eating this" Sid smirked, but dug in anyway.
"oh who cares. i busted my ass to make this. you will eat it and you will like it."
"ok ok... so what happened?" he asked with a chuckle, knowing there was a story behind that statement.
"well i didn't really check to see if we had cake mix, and when i went to make the cake we didn't have any. So i went to the store looking like i just rolled out of bed and i sprinted through the store like a crazy person. I'm pretty sure the cashier thought i was on drugs." she explained the whole thing, waving her fork around in the air as she told the story. Sid's smile grew.
"well it's really good"
"Good" Kay replied, satisfied.
They kept eating, but there was still some left that they couldn't finish. They set their forks down and groaned.
"i'm never eating cake again" Kay joked. Of course it wasn't true.
"me either" Sid laughed. Kay pushed the pan out of the way and grabbed his present.
"here, this is for you" she said, handing the bag to him. He took the tissue paper out of the top and pulled out the album.
"you didn't have to do this" he said with a grin.
"yes i did. i wanted to." Kay argued with an eager smile spread across her face.
Sid opened the album and flipped through it carefully. Kay looked with him and they talked about all the old stories behind the pictures. She enjoyed hearing about his family and friends back home.
When they got to the end, Sid read Kay's quote aloud.
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."
He cleared his throat and looked at it for a moment.
"i like this quote" he nodded.
"me too" Kay quietly replied, resting her head on his shoulder. "there's more" she whispered.
He turned the page to see two letters; one from Kay and one from his mom.
"you can read your moms later if you want" Kay told him. He agreed and picked up the one that Kay wrote.
Sid-
Congratulations, you're old :) not really, but you get it.
I can't believe we've only known each other for three months. You've become my best friend and my boyfriend. I love spending everyday with you. You make me happier when i'm sad, and you always know what to say to make me laugh; you get me.
I hope your rookie season is a success. I hope i can be there with you along the way. I get so excited about finally seeing you out there living your dream that you've told me so much about.
You know i'll always be here for you no matter where you go or what happens to us in the future.
You will always have a friend in me. I promise.
Yours always,
Kay

Sid looked up from the letter.
"you're the best" he whispered and pulled her closer, kissing her on the forehead.
"no you are" Kay smiled.
They sat together on the blanket and watched as the sky got darker. Night fell upon them. The crickets chirped in the background as they lay next to each other under the stars.
"look" Sid whispered, tapping Kay on the shoulder and pointing to the shooting star.
"oh my gosh! i've never actually seen one before" Kay laughed quietly.
"make a wish" he told her
"ok.. we'll do it at the same time. ready go." She said. They shut their eyes and made their wishes.
"did you do it?" he asked curiously.
"yeah, even though it was pointless, considering i already have everything i want sitting right here" she looked over at Sid and smiled that goofy smile of hers.
"you're a hopeless romantic, you know that?" he laughed and kissed her before she could respond.

twenty.

When seven rolled around, Kay was sitting in the living room with jean shorts on and a white abercrombie and fitch tank top. Sid knocked on the door at seven and she answered. He was wearing shorts, tennis shoes, and a hockey night in canada tee shirt.
"the lemieuxs arn't home so i thought we could drive your car" he stated.
"yeah sure" Kay answered him plainly. They walked out to the driveway and Kay got in the passenger seat. She handed Sid the keys and he climbed into the drivers seat.
The drive to wherever they were going was silent, but it wasn't an awkward silence. They just didn't have anything to say to each other, not yet anyway. Kay just looked out the window; it was quite a nice night. The storm had passed and there were rain drops still lingering on the leaves of the trees, but the sky was absolutely beautiful.
They drove for a while north until they came to a lake. It was quiet, away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. Kay got out of the car with Sid and they walked down to the water, out onto a board walk type thing. Kay leaned on the railing to watch the sun go down while Sid stood behind her watching.
"what are you thinking about?" Kay asked quietly without turning around to look at him.
"you" he replied.
"thats new" she chuckled. Sid smiled and stood there with his hands in his pockets like he always does when hes nervous.
"do you forgive me for last night?"
"i'm getting there" Kay said, letting out a deep breath. Sid walked closer to her and wrapped his arm around her waist.
" how am i doing so far?" he whispered in her ear, making her spine tingle.
"you're doing ok." Kay bit her lip.
He innocently kissed her neck and rested his head on her shoulder, watching sun sink lower.
A few moments of silence went by.
"i think we're good together." Kay blurted out. Sid furrowed his eyebrows and chuckled.
"what?"
"..we're good together." she repeated, craning her neck to look at him behind her.
"we are" Sid nodded in agreement. She turned around in his arms and leaned back on the railing. Their lips brushed and her heart pounded.
"you get me every time" she whispered.
"i know" he whispered back and slowly moved his lips closer. He tilted his head as he kissed her and rested his hands on the railing behind her.

They stayed there sitting on the dock for a half hour more, barely talking. They were just enjoying each others company. When it was time to go, Sid spoke up.
"lets go" he got up and held his hand out for Kay. He helped her out and they walked to the car together.
"you know, nobody is home at my house. we should go there." she said as she slid into the passenger seat and Sid turned her car on.
"yeah we can do that" he responded with his eyes focused on the road. He had one hand gripping the bottom of the steering wheel. Kay turned on some music to pass the time.
They pulled into Kay's driveway and went to the front door. Kay unlocked it.
"want anything to drink?" she asked.
"i'm good" Sid answered. She nodded and led Sid upstairs to her room. They sat down on her bed.
"your birthday is in two weeks" Kay smiled, trying to make conversation.
"finally" he grinned.
"what do you want?" she asked. She was still thinking about what to get him/where to take him.
"i don't know i havn't really thought about it. we start training camp on the fourth so i might be busy" the smile on his face faded and so did Kay's.
"aww and i had a really good surprise" She teased, and fell back on the bed.
"and what would this surprise be?" Sid asked, turning around to her.
"it wouldn't be a surprise if i told you, Sid," she replied. Sid crawled closer to her.
"well maybe you should just give it to me now.." He leaned over her. His necklace was hanging down and Kay played with it.
"i don't know about that" she smirked.
"i think you should" he said, lowering himself onto her.
He was trying to be all romantic and smooth. He ran his hands over her torso, so she stretched her arms over her head. However, on the way up she nailed him in the nose. Her mouth hung open, not knowing what to say.
"oh my god! Sid!" she sat up. His nose was bleeding so she got up and ran to the bathroom, coming back out with a box of kleenex.
"thanks" Sid said as he sat up and held the tissue to his face.
"i'm sorry." she apologized "i ruined the moment."
"it's ok" Sid chuckled "we should wait.. obviously."
"obviously" Kay smiled.

nineteen.

After he left, Kay just sat there staring at the ceiling thinking to herself. She found herself saying a prayer since that's just what she does.
"so i havn't done this in a while." she started. "i'm sorry about that. but i'm completely lost. sometimes i feel so small. everything's happening so fast and it's like i can't slow it down. i love Sid with all my heart, don't let him get sucked into all the fame and fortune, please. i can't lose him."
It was short and sweet, just right. She changed out of her jeans and white tee into a tee shirt and underwear, and she got under the covers.

Meanwhile, Sid was back at the Lemieux's sitting in his room on his bed, throwing a stress ball against the wall. He couldn't believe what he had done. He just got tied up at the rink and instead of telling everyone he had to go, he stayed. He had been thinking about Kay the whole time and thought she would understand, she wouldn't be mad, because he didn't think she was like that. But it hurt her feelings, obviously. Over and over he threw the ball against the wall thinking about her. He finally thought of something to do and picked up his cell phone.
"Hi it's Sid" he began. "i'm not going to be able to make it to any meetings or anything tomorrow" he informed. "thanks. i apologize, there's just some things i have to take care of. ...yep.... later." he hung up and let out a deep breath. He sat there spinning his cell phone around between his fingers just staring at it, contemplating texting or calling Kay. It was late, though, and he decided against it. He lay back on his bed and fell asleep fully clothed.

July 24, 2009
Sid woke up with a groan and rubbed his face. He looked down and noticed he was still in his clothes. On top of that, it was storming pretty badly outside.
"i'm such an ass" he mumbled, rolling out of bed. It was 9:00, and he wandered downstairs, but there was no one there. A note was stuck on the fridge-

we all went out for the day
feel free to make yourself anything you want to eat
-Nat

Sid didn't bother eating, he just went back upstairs to his room and got a shower.

Across the street, Kay had woken up at the same time, feeling the same way; like a piece of crap. She sat up in bed and just stayed there for a while before getting into the shower. When she got out, she put some sweats on and went downstairs. Nobody was home in her house either. She figured they went to one of Leland's things, and she wandered into the laundry room to fold clothes in an attempt to help her mom out a little. She put the we clothes in the dryer and started it, then began to fold the dry ones, placing them into a basket. She kept thinking about Sid, and was day dreaming when the drier suddenly stopped and everything went dark. As if things could get any worse.
"oh COME ON" she yelled. Her voice echoed through the house, and she walked out into the foyer. She sat down on the steps and debated what to do.
"I wander if the Lemieuxs have power? ... No you're not doing that" she thought aloud. "Yes you are..." She got up, slipped her tennis shoes on, and walked out the door in her sweat pants tee shirt. She ran over to the Lemieuxs knowing it wasn't a good idea, and was practically drenched when she arrived at the door. She rang the doorbell. About a minute later the door opened- she noticed they still had power. She then noticed who was standing there in just his boxers with a towel around his neck. It was an awkward silence at first.
"hi... uhm, are the Lemieuxs here?" she asked, trying not to let her eyes stray.
"uh no they're out.. somewhere.." Sid answered.
"oh"
"can i help?" He asked timidly.
"well nobody's home and our power went out. I think it's something with a fuse or something. i don't know." she replied, trying to make it seem like she was fine.
"well i think i can try to fix it.. if you want me to, i mean." Sid rubbed the back of his neck and hoped she would say yes.
"sure" she began to leave, then stopped. "but put a shirt on... and pants. pants would be appropriate." she turned around and began to walk back in the rain with a sly smile on her face. Sid just shut the door and laughed. He ran upstairs to get dressed.

About 15 minutes later, Sid arrived in red gym shorts along with a gray sweat shirt and Kay let him in. His hair didn't have any of the gel in it (kay hated the gel) and he smelled like heaven, but she held herself back.
"where's your electrical box?" he asked.
"in the basement."
He followed her down to the basement with a flashlight to where the box was. He opened it up and began fiddling with all the wires/switches.
How did i get myself into this, Kay thought. It was so awkward and they weren't saying anything until Kay decided to speak up.
"do you always answer the door like that?" she questioned.
"all the time" Sid said sarcastically. Kay just nodded and couldn't fight the smile that crept it's way across her face. "i took the day off today" he said, briefly glancing at her standing next to him with her arms crossed over her chest.
She thought for a moment then asked, "why?"
"because i wanted to make up for what i did last night" Sid answered plainly.
"i don't know.." she hesitated.
"please" Sid pleaded. He flipped a switch and everything was lit up again. He turned to her and wiped his hands on his sweat shirt. "i want to make it right"
Kay bit her lip and looked around. She was at a loss for words. She didn't want to give up that easy; she was stubborn, but then again, so was he. "fine" she muttered, and began back up the steps as Sid followed. They went to the front door.
"i'll pick you up at seven tonight." He informed.
"I won't hold my breath" Kay replied. Sid just hung his head and let himself out the door. She watched him walk away and sighed. "look on the bright side, the storm is over." she said to herself.

HAHAH

eighteen.

So Sidney and Kay hung out for the next two days, like always. They were beginning to not go out in public as much because people recognized Sid. Kay was fine with it, she knew it would have happened sooner or later. As long as she was with him, though, she didn't care. They didn't have to go out to places.

July 22, 2009
On Sunday, Sid and Kay talked about what was going to happen the next day.
"so, tomorrow we're going to do something special." Sid grinned, interlacing his fingers with Kay's as they sat by the Lemieux's pool.
"like what?" Kay smirked
"something you'll enjoy doing because it's one of your favorite things to do"
"make fun of you?" she questioned.
"no!" Sid laughed.
"i really don't know what's more fun than that, Sid." she replied with a straight face.
"that's it" Sid picked her up "you're going in"
"Put me down!" Kay laughed.
"sorry" He grinned and threw her in the pool. She came up to the surface with a sly look on her face.
"jerk" she joked.
"at least i apologized" Sid responded. Kay swam over to where he was standing on the edge of the pool.
"oh really? Well, i'm sorry that i have to do this." She smiled, making Sid confused, and pulled him by the ankles into the pool with her.
"that wasn't fair!" he yelled, "but i'll forgive you i guess"
"aww thank you so much." Kay chuckled, giving him a kiss.

(monday) July 23, 2005.
Kay woke up to a white rose on her nightstand with a note tied to it, figuring it was from Sid and Leland "delivered" it. For some reason, he liked getting one single flower.

Today is finally one month even though it seems soo much longer. I want to take you out somewhere.. i'm pretty sure you'll love my idea :)
i have to do some things, but i'll pick you up at 7.
- Sid
PS: wear jeans.

Kay smiled as she read it. She hopped out of bed and put the flower in a vase.
She went downstairs and gave her mom a kiss on the cheek, making her smile. She buzzed through the kitchen and out the door to go running. (She runs monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, and friday.)
"whats gotten into her" her mom wandered with a chuckle.

The hours passed slowly until it was 6:00. Kay ate dinner then went upstairs to get ready. She got showered, picked out dark wash jeans, and plain white tee that showed her mid drift just a little tiny bit. Her hair was wavy, and she had a small amount of eye make up on, along with the small diamond cross she always wore. She figured she wouldn't be needing her cell tonight; it was just her and Sid. She left it on her night stand.
When she was finished prepping, she decided to go sit out on the porch. It was only 6:50, and she knew Sid would be right on time at 7, but she waited anyway.
Ten minutes went by and Kay was getting anxious. She was still excited to see him. Five more minutes went by.
7:05 "i wonder where he is" she thought aloud. She sat there tapping her fingers on the arm rest of the chair on the porch.
7:10 Five more minutes. Still no sid. "probably just running a little late.." she thought.
7:15 Five more. nope. "this is wierd... he's never late. he hates being late." but still she sat there waiting. "he'll show up." she promised herself.
7:25 She crossed her legs and nervously shook her foot; it was a habit.
7:30 "ok Sid this isn't funny anymore" she whispered to no one in particular.
7:40 Her eyes started to water. A single tear rolled down her face and she wiped it away, forcing a smile, letting out a sigh, and getting up out of the chair. She walked into the house and slowly up the steps.
"Honey is everything ok? i thought you left" her mom yelled from the living room. Kay didn't bother answering. She just went into her room and shut the door behind her; she wasn't one to make a big deal about stuff, especially guys.
She looked at her phone sitting on the nightstand and picked it up. He didn't call or text anything. She shut the phone and shook her head. She fell back on her bed as a tear hit the pillow.
this isn't like him, what happened?. she thought, and drifted off to sleep

It was around 11 when Kay heard someone open her door and shut it behind them. They stood in the dark door way and Kay knew it was Sid. She was laying on her side and her back was to him, but she still knew it was him. Her eyes opened but she didn't move or look at him. She didn't want him to see her this way, and she didn't want to make a big deal. She knew he didn't think it had this much of an impact on her.
"hey" Sid whispered, turning on a lamp. Kay sat up but still had her back to him. She wiped off her cheeks in case there was any makeup on them.
"oh hey" She said sounding all stuffed up. Sid paused.
"You ok?" he asked.
"yeah, yeah, i'm fine" She replied. He walked over to her and sat down next to her, looking at her. She looked up at him and let out a small laugh and a sniffle thinking about how ridiculous she was being/looking.
"Kay, don't cry. i'm sorry" was all Sid could say.
"it's ok, i understand, really, i do"
"i didn't know this meant so much to you" He replied, not thinking.
"Sid, that's not the point! So what, it was one stupid date. But you didn't show up- you didn't even call me or send a text- nothing!" She had a painful expression and Sid just played with his thumbs. "you have priorities, i understand, but don't you think i deserved a call let alone a text message? You're by best friend and my boyfriend. I didn't think you would stand me up."
He nodded.
"i hate seeing you like this. i screwed up." he managed. His voice cracked a little. "i don't want to make you upset. I should have called, i should have showed up."
"yeah" was all Kay said. "it's late. you should go."
Sid listened and headed for the doorway, closing it on his way out.
Kay lay back and finally realized she was dating Sidney Crosby, not just the guy next door.

seventeen.

Just as Sid had told her on Sunday morning, he was busy the rest of the week. It sucked and Kay was bored, but she caught up with her friends which was something she had been meaning to do. On Monday, Cassie slept over and on Tuesday they went over to Dan's house. Dan was one of Kay's good friends ever since freshman year. He always had a girlfriend and it upset Kay, but she realized they were just friends and that was all they would ever be. He got accepted to Penn State, the college he always wanted to go to. Kay was happy for him.
On Wednesday, Kay woke up and went running. She had finally convinced herself to start running again. She really did miss it.
Thursday, she woke up and ran again and saw Sid in the driveway getting ready to leave. She didn't stop, though. They talked every night on the phone so it's not like they had any new stuff to talk about. Sid just waved and she stuck her tongue out at him, making him smile. When she got back, her and Leland began the dreaded mulching that needed to be done; they didn't pay to have their lawn maintained because Kay's dad thought it was a total waste of money.
At dinner later that day, she got some news she wasn't too happy about.
"we invited Jacob and his family over for a visit tomorrow... for dinner." Kay's dad announced from the other end of the table. Kay just sat there looking at him.
"i'm not talking to him." she stated.
"you'll welcome them into our house properly, Kaylen." Her dad told her. Kay just shook her head and let out a sigh.
"why do you have to keep bringing him into the picture"
"we all know this little fling of yours isn't going to last. Jacob is going to make something of himself, and Sid, well, he's a hockey player." He responded.
"He's a great guy" she argued.
"i'm sure. But he's not for you, Kay."
What does he know, she thought to herself.

July 20, 2005
The mulching carried over to Friday (after she ran of course) and she was sitting in the planter pulling out every weed she came across when Sid came strolling into the driveway. It was around two in the afternoon. Her back was to him and she was cursing her parents for making her do this on a Friday.
"it's not like i really had anything better to do though, considering Sid can't do anything. And even if i didn't have him i still wouldn't be doing anything, because i, in fact, would still have no life." she mumbled to herself. She wasn't really making any sense and Sid stood behind her trying not to laugh. "this is boring as hell. somebody kill me." Sid cleared his throat making her jump and turn around. She laughed when she saw him and slapped him on the leg. "you scared me."
"sorry" Sid laughed, "guess what.."
"what"
"you do have a life" he smirked.
"I just hate yard work." Kay chuckled.
"really? i couldn't tell" Sid replied sarcastically and cracked a smile. He sat down next to her and helped her pull some of the straggling weeds that were left. "you wanna do something tonight?"
"um well, tonight's not a good night. rain check?" Kay tried to look like she was happy and nothing was wrong.
"yeah, sure. whatever works for you." Sid said, the confusion showing in his expression. Kay just nodded. It was awkwardly silent and Sid decided to end thier little visit. "i better get back to the Lemieux's."
"yeah." They both stood up and Sid gave Kay a kiss before leaving. It broke Kay's heart that she didn't tell him what was going on tonight, she just knew he wouldn't be happy about Jacob the creeper coming over. It was better not to tell him, and plus, it's not like she invited him herself.

Later that night, Jacob and his family arrived. Kay was still in her room. She was wearing a green dress since she had to look "nice" for everyone.
"Kay, come on." Leland poked his head in to tell her they were here.
"just a minute" she replied, then got up and followed her little brother down the stairs. She sat in the family room with everyone else and just listened to everyone talk. She also watched Jacob eye her up from across the room and wanted to vomit.
Dinner was finally finished and her mom put it out on the kitchen counter for everyone to help themselves. The parents sat outside on patio, Leland ran off somewhere, and Jacob loomed over Kay like a shadow in the kitchen.
"you haven't said much" Jacob said with a stuck up tone.
"so" Kay replied while being blocked into a corner by him.
"what's wrong" He asked.
like it's any of your business, She thought. "you." she said, managing to muster up the courage to tell him what she really thought of him. A smirk came across Jacob's face, then Kay heard a knock on the door. She looked through the glass to see Sid. "you've gotta be kidding me" she whispered to herself. She pushed Jacob out of the way and swiftly walked to the door, her heels making the clacking sound across the hardwood.
"hi" Sidney greeted with a yellow rose in hand.
"hi. uh.. i told you i couldn't see you tonight" Kay said nervously.
"i know, i'm sorry. i just-" Sid stopped when he saw Jacob his hand around Kay's waist like the little snake he was and Kay's eyes widened.
"get off me" she demanded.
"woahh ok there. feisty." Jacob said, backing away. He slipped back into the kitchen.
"what's going on." Sid asked when no one was around.
"my dad felt the need to invite Jacob and his family over for dinner." Kay explained, stepping out onto the porch with him and closing the door.
"i see" was all he said back. There was few moments of silence. "this is for you" he finally said, handing the rose to her.
"why thank you" she smiled as she admired it.
"i don't understand why your dad keeps trying to force him on you" Sid shoved his hands in his pockets and looked around.
"i don't understand either. i don't know how he can think Jacob is a good person. he's a freak. he cornered me in the kitchen and i honestly wanted to throw up." Kay said, getting flustered.
Sid cracked a smile "you should have" he shrugged. Kay laughed a little.
"ew sid, just ew"
"yeah, that was gross. sorry." Sid laughed. It was quiet.
"you wanna get out of here?" he asked with a mischievous look on his face. Kay thought about it for a moment.
"yup" she grinned. She slipped her heels off and carried them. Sid took her hand and they ran to the Lemieux's, quietly slipping away from the gathering. They went through the garage and let themselves into the house. Nat and Mario were in the basement and the kids were outside swimming. They went right up to Sid's room.
"your parents are gonna be mad at you" Sid teased.
"i don't care." Kay replied carelessly, throwing her heels on the floor and flopping down on Sid's bed that was covered by a big white comforter.
"good. Now, what do you wanna do." Sid asked as he sat down next to her. Kay noticed he had a tv with a VCR sitting on on top of his dresser, and he had a couple of videos even though they were old.
"lets watch a movie" she pointed to the tv. It was about 8:30 and the sun was setting.
"ok" Sid agreed. He walked over to his collection of videos and named them all. "we've got toy story, lion king, oliver & company-" Kay burst out laughing. "my mom packed these ok give me a break" Sid smiled and chucked bambi at her, then continued. "miracle which we already saw 50 times so that's dumb, the mummy, blair witch projects, silence of the lambs.."
"ooh blair witch projects" Kay wriggled her eye brows.
"ok. but when i have to kick you out and you have to walk home in the dark don't complain" Sid chuckled.
"you wouldn't" she gasped.
"i'm kidding" he assured. He popped the tape in and it began. They lay on his bed.

Lets just say Kay didn't really deal with scary movies very well. She looked like she was gonna crap her pants at any moment and Sid tried his hardest not to laugh. He had seen it before so he was fine.
"i can't even tell what's going on i wish they would hold the camera still for two seconds" she complained nervously, holding onto Sid and practically breaking his hand. It was the last ten minutes of the movie.
"well, it's a camcorder" Sid tried to explain.
"the girl keeps screaming in the background. what the heck." Kay closed her eyes, refusing to watch it.
The person with the camera sees a guy standing in the corner, she falls over, and it ends.
"it's over now, you can look" Sid told her. He turned the light on his nightstand on, and she sat up with a sigh of relief. She looked at the clock; 10:05 pm.
"well, i texted my parents and told them where i was. They'll get over it."
"you better get home though" He didn't want her getting in trouble. He got up, grabbed her shoes, and stood there waiting for her.
"siidddneyy" she whined, trying to pull him back.
"oh come on, stop being a baby" he smiled. He practically dragged her out of the room, down the stairs, and out the door through the garage. She just stood there in the dark with her dress and bare feet, not moving. "lets go" Sid urged. She stuck her bottom lip out. "i'll give you a piggy back ride" he coaxed. She gave in and hopped on.
"we're never watching a scary movie again" he announced in a joking manner as he carried her down the driveway.
"you're such a party pooper" She joked and kissed him on the cheek, making his nose scrunch up. "you know, i would much rather watch that movie with you than be stuck at my house socializing with the scum of the earth."
"aw i'm glad you feel that way" Sid laughed.

sixteen.

"There are pictures of you on the Internet sleeping with the Cup.

(Laughing) We don't have to go there, but I do have this idea of playing street hockey with my friends - winning team gets the Stanley Cup. We always used to pretend the Cup was on the line in our street hockey games, so now it really can be."

Gotta love Sid just changing the subject like that. How does he get street hockey out of this statement? hahah

July 15, 2005

Sunday. A day of rest; except when Sidney Crosby is calling you at nine in the morning.
"hello?" Kay said, rubbing her eyes and straining to look at the alarm clock.
"hello Kay." Sid said in the creepiest voice.
"What the hell" Kay laughed
"i have plans" He mused.
"i'm tired" She whined into her cell phone.
"i'm sorry. but i'm not going to be able to do anything for the rest of the week and i really wanna hang out... and i missed your voice." Sidney stated, making Kay smile.
"I just saw you last night" she laughed "but i guess that's a good excuse for waking me up."
"It is. Can you come over later when i'm done working out and everything?" He asked
"i don't know. i'll have to see if i can fit you into my schedule." She joked. "Oh wait. yes. i think i can! but wait, i thought you had to go running."
"Don't worry about it. I'll be waiting. The Lemieux residence. 6:45 pm... and wear tennis shoes.. and comfortable clothes. k bye." Sid hung up right away and Kay just looked at the phone wandering what had gotten into him. She got out of bed, got a shower, and got ready for the day.

Kay arrived at the Lemieuxs at 6:45, just as Sid told her to, and the note on the door told her to come in. She heard Sid in the kitchen so she wandered through the foyer to find him leaning against the granite counter, drinking a protein shake. She walked over to him and gave him a kiss.
"hey" she smiled "Where's Nathalie and Mario? and what are we going to do?"
"They're visiting their friends or something, and we're going running" Sid said plainly as he gulped down the rest of the shake.
"Sid." Kay said with a hint of uncertainty and worry in her voice. "i haven't gone running since school let out"
"it's not like we're going to run a marathon. It's like two miles." Sid reasoned as he washed out the container his drink was in and put it in the sink. Kay thought about it then rolled her eyes and gave in as Sid grabbed her hand and began to drag her out of the house.
"Just go easy on me." Kay said half jokingly. Sid turned around with a smile.
"i'll try to." he replied. They quickly stretched in the driveway then began their run down the street. "see this isn't so bad" Sid pointed out.
"we just started" Kay said, her breathes beginning to get heavier as they made their way through Sewickley Heights. It was sort of hilly, which was something Kay wasn't used to. They continued running without speaking. They were concentrating and Sid was focused ahead, his posture perfect with his chest out and his head up. Kay, on the other hand was feeling it.
"Stand up straight, keep your chest out" Sid said, breathing heavily.
"pfft. i was a runner, Sid. I can do it." Kay laughed. Sid just smiled and shrugged, and Kay could see their houses up the hill. They were almost there. "You know, you should probably join a gym and run there or something cause people really enjoy staring at you." Kay stated. Sid just shook his head and laughed. "and normal people usually run in the morning," she added.
"i'm not normal." Sid responded, desperately trying to keep a straight face, but failed. He took off in a sprint up the hill to the house and ended up in the Lemieux's driveway. He began to stretch out when Kay came up behind him and jump on him, tackling him into the grass.
"Hello" Sid greeted as Kay lay on top of him
"i can't believe you made me go running when i'm in the worst shape of my life" Kay playfully scolded.
"you look in shape to me" Sid said, trying to be smart.
"hm. i really didn't feel like it." Kay said, sitting up and wiping her forehead on her arm. They sat in the grass cooling off, until she had an idea and her eyes lit up. "come on" she said, tugging on sid's arm. She ran down to the pool and took off her shoes/socks. She threw them on the lounge chair and proceeded to take off her shirt while Sid just stood there. "Are you coming in or what?" she asked, taking off her shorts and throwing them at Sid. She dove in. He just laughed and pulled off his tee shirt and shorts. He threw them behind him and jumped in after Kay, swimming over to her and picking her up.
"what has gotten into you?" he asked.
"the Bataan death run made me delirious" she joked.
"i'll have to take you on more death marches. I like it when you're delirious." Sid joked back with a smile. Kay pushed him away playfully.
"i refuse to do that ever again." She retorted, her arms folded across her chest.
"we'll see" Sid lunged after her and the two of them played around in the pool, flirting with one another, until they heard something. "shh shh" He quieted Kay down and they heard car doors shutting. "oh shit" They looked at each other, then got out of the pool at the speed of light. Kay ran to her clothes and Sid got her a towel. He wrapped her in it and frantically kissed her.
"where should i go?" Kay asked in a panic between kisses.
"just go hide behind a bush or something" Sid answered, also in between kisses. They kissed one more time until she ran up the hill to the front of the house. Sid searched for his clothes, but the pool light came on before he could get to them.
"Sidney?" Mario yelled from the deck.
"uh yeah, hi" Sid straightened up as he stood there in his dripping wet boxers.
"What's going on?" Mario asked with an intimidating voice.
"oh, you know, taking a swim." Sid explained nervously.
"In your underwear?" Mario stifled his laughter, knowing the kid was up to something.
"yep" He chuckled nervously.
"uh huh. Well, it's a little cold down there i assume?" Mario asked, confusing Sid. He looked down at his boxers and felt his face become hot. He placed his hands over his crotch and tried to think of a catchy comeback, but Mario spoke up. "Put some clothes on" he laughed as he walked back into the house.
"fuck my life" Sid muttered under his breath as he scattered to find his clothes. He picked up his shoes, shirt, and shorts, then made his way up to where Kay disappeared.
"Sid!" Kay whispered from behind the hedges that lined the house. Sid jumped.
"jesus" he said, making his way over to her and slipping his shorts back on. Kay was already in her clothes, her hair dripping wet and the little make she had on running down her cheek. She handed him her towel and he dried his hair and some of his body before putting his shirt back on. "well, Mario probably thinks i'm on crack." He said plainly.
"I heard." Kay said, holding back her laughter. "come over" she said.
"ok" sid agreed. He took her hand and they walked across the street to Kay's house. They went through the garage and Kay found her dad in the office and her mom watching tv in the family room, so her and Sid quietly made their way up the stairs into her room. She carefully shut the door and locked it behind her, then jumped on Sid, pulling him onto the bed and giving him a big kiss. She then opened the big window above her bed and swung her legs out. She sat on the edge, and patted the spot next to her.
"what if i fall out the window?" Sid asked jokingly.
"I'll catch you" Kay assured, making both of them laugh.
"i think i'm one too many protein shakes in for you to catch me, but i'll be glad to take you with me." He explained with a devilish grin.
They sat in silence for a few moments looking out into the night time, and Kay placed her hand on Sid's. She leaned her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes. 'i'm lucky', she thought to herself. She stopped day dreaming to feel Sid's hands on her cheeks. She looked up at him as he feverishly pushed his lips to hers and she held onto the edge of the window sill. He pressed his forehead to hers.
"I better go" he whispered, "they're gonna wander where i am"
"just a little longer" Kay whispered back. She softly kissed him on the cheek and rested her head back on his shoulder.
"just a little" Sid agreed quietly.

"i've been trying to slow it down, i've been trying to take it in, in this here today gone tomorrow world we're living in."

So i'm back from 2 weeks of vacationing! It was perfect and i feel better than ever :) I went to Tybee Island, GA then to Atlanta to visit my great aunt and uncle. I met my little cousins Mia and Gigi for the first time since they live in California... thats pretty far haha. But i've learned a lot from them, even though Mia is only 3 and Gigi is 4. Though they may not know it, they've taught me a life lesson i will never forget.

To be honest, i never thought little kids could teach you much. I walked down to the basement where they were playing wii and i introduced myself. They were shy, and at that moment i didn't think i would form that big of a bond with them, but boy was i wrong. I sat down at their little table used for coloring and began to draw a picture. Sure enough, the girls got a little curious and asked me if i was a good artist. I said that i was ok and Gigi asked "Can you draw a mermaid?". "I can try." i answered. So i did. They loved it. Everyday they wanted to draw mermaids and sea creatures haha.

The rest of the week went on and we spent everyday together. We went rafting down the Chattahoochee River, and we went to a museum all about the civil war in Georgia. We became very close and it kind of made me wish i had a little sister instead of three brothers :P I did however become extra close to the younger one, Mia. She was always happy and bouncing around, wanting to do something. She was a hoot and i loved it. When the end of the week came and we had to say our goodbyes, i was absolutely dreading it. I hugged everyone and saw Mia standing off to the side away from everyone, probably wandering what was going on. I knelt down and opened my arms for a hug. She ran into them and i picked her up. Then, she looked at me and said something i will not soon forget; "i love you, I'll miss you". I just smiled and thought "what do i say? should i say i love you back? How can a 3 year old say and i can't?". Then i finally said "I'll miss you too". Why couldn't i say i love you back to her?

Now, I'm sure you're thinking 3 year olds aren't that smart and they don't know the meaning of love. But they're not stupid. They know what they want, what they don't want. What they like and dislike. She knew she loved me, and it was sincere when she said it. The point that I'm trying to get to is that we should learn from Mia. She says what she feels without a second thought, unlike most of us. As we get older, we claim to get "wiser" but we also get colder and more shielded... time is funny the way it works.

I really do wish i would have said i love you back to Mia, because even after that one week, i really did create a special bond with her. Come to think of it, i wish i would have done a lot of things. I wish i would be nicer to my mom sometimes. I wish i would tell my dad how much he means to me, even though I'm growing up and may not show it all the time. I wish me and my oldest brother could be closer instead of being in different cities. I wish i laughed more. I wish i cried more. I wish i could let my guard down, do something new, and i will. I'll take what Mia has taught me; let yourself love and be loved. There's not enough time in life to hold back. As Kenny Chesney once put it, "when your hour glass runs out of sand you can't flip it over and start again so take every breath God gave you for what it's worth... 100 years goes faster than you think, so don't blink".

Thanks,
DNR.
